My Ultreo Toothbrush arrived last Tuesday and once it charged, I began using it regularly. The first few uses were a bit awkward – I had to think about my brushing technique again. I haven’t had to do that since I switched to a power brush. The Sonicare doesn’t work with the “brushing back and forth” technique – you have to let the bristle action do the work . With the Ultreo, you are supposed to use circular brushing strokes to help spread those “scrubbing bubbles” around.
There’s not much to dislike about the brush – the only thing I can think of is that it only came with one brushhead. I wish I had ordered an extra one so that my husband could also use the brush. About the brushhead – nice design. The only complaint I had about the Sonicare is the knowledge of what lurks under the plastic of the brushhead. If you don’t clean it out regularly, a very disgusting black film will form. The Ultreo’s brushhead does not trap water the way the Sonicare’s does. New power-brush users will not appreciate this design feature as much as those of us who have owned the Sonicare.
The big question: does it work the way it says it works? I’m very pleased with the results so far. My teeth feel cleaner than before. I don’t think the Sonicare does a bad job at all – but I did notice a cleaner result with the Ultreo. One of the claims is that it will reduce staining. I’ll be using the Ultreo with my Sensodyne Pronamel to keep my diet Coke stains to a minimum. If you are also using the Ultreo, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
**Update: One of my dentists, Dr. Julie Tran has used the Ultreo also and wasn’t as thrilled with it as I was. She thought the brushhead was too large and that her teeth did not get that “squeaky clean” feeling. She’s a big fan of her Oral-B Sonic.
**Another update: The Sonicare Flexcare was released in August – did I switch back? Read it here

[...] The Ultreo Toothbrush: The Verdict Is In [...]
As an RDH in Grand Rapids, MI I can not say strongly enough that the Ultreo is nothing more than a gimmick. In no way does it clean any better than the other power toothbrushes on the market and it is markedly more expensive as well as trickier to use than other power brushes. I’ve tested it in various situations versus Sonciare, Rotodent, as well as Oral-B, and in no way does it perform at a higher level. If nothing else it makes it harder to brush your teeth.
I bouught the Ultreo because my dentist and hygenist recommended it over the Sonic. They had no financial gains to make in this recommendation. Its vibrations are less blatant than the Sonic and it seems to do a great job on my teeth. I appreciate the bubbles action as I am a cardiac patient on Coumadin and the Ultroe’s gentleness but efficient foaming is wonderful. It’s also easier to hold in one’s hand if plagued by arthritis. I got my Ultreo in March and can’t live without it! It works very well and my teeth feel much cleaner. I would highly recommend this toothbrush (and do regularly).
I’ve been using the Ultreo for about 2 months. It took a little getting used to but but the results so far are great. I’ve noticed my teeth are whiter and the staining I usually get on the back of my front teeth is not there. The problem gum areas where I just had 4’s and 5’s seem reduced. I know for sure after my next periodontist appointment.
5-20-09 I have used Ultreo for about a year and am on my second brush set. Suddenly, the vibrating system began to cut out like a car missing a piston. It’s so bad I ordered another as they are quite checp nowadays.
I like the Ultreo and wouldn’t use anything else. It does a great job on a 74 year-old mouth and I have very few 4’s. Its vibration is easy to take. The Sonicare bruch drives me thru the roof. Jim
i used an ultreo for about 60 days when it caught fire due to a short in the unit. i am back with sonicare and feel safer.
