BBC: Rate of Dental Abscess Hospitalizations Double

Almost 1500 admissions a year according to an analysis of NHS (Britain’s National Health Service) data can be attributed to problems with access to dental care. This patient blogged about his wait for treatment of his abscess – he claims he’s been waiting for over 2 years. White Coat Rants – one of my favorite health blogs – posted about it but put up a picture that was just nauseating. (**See below)Make sure you’re not eating lunch when you click over to the site. My son is used to seeing pics of bombed-out teeth and watching gum surgery videos so I had to laugh when he walked by and said “that’s gross!”

What’s really sad is that not just the number of abscesses but also oral cancer rates that have increased. Back in February, Dr. Nigel Carter of the British Health Foundation blamed lack of dental access for oral cancer mortality rates remaining at just about 50%. Wait a minute – we have arguably better access to dental care here in the US but our oral cancer rates are about the same. So is it access to care or the screening process that is faulty?

  1. If you visit England you will notice a fair amount of bad teeth.

If you believe the Government spin doctors that will say there is no problem but nhs dentistry is quite rare post age 16 now.

I’m quite sure that many will not go private to stop this until there teeth ‘really hurt’. Then the damage is done.
