Making Changes: Re-Evaluating Your Practice

The economy was a hot topic at the AADOM’s annual meeting. For many offices the current state of affairs is having little to no effect on their practice. But for many others it is challenging to keep the schedule full.

If your office is slow, take a step back and think about what you  can do differently to turn the tide. Perhaps you should consider adding a new procedure, new technology or new marketing. For example, sedation dentistry is a way to set your office apart from the crowd. 30% of patients are fearful of the dentist – probably even more than that. Right now, adding 30% to your patient base probably sounds appealing.

Any time you add a new benefit, make sure you broadcast it to your patients. Write a press release, send out an email and put it in your newsletter. Make sure your hygienist is talking about it with his or her patients.

I’ve read opinions that your practice’s performance is a direct reflection of your attitude. I am not sure if that’s completely accurate. Sometimes there are bigger factors than employee satisfaction. I know of some top notch offices that are struggling – I don’t accept that it is because they’re not optimistic enough. But it never hurts to take a step back and evaluate whether or not you are still on track. I’d love to hear from any offices that have made changes to increase production.
